Setting Standards for Ethical AI
Who We Are
We are a multidisciplinary team committed to making AI safe, ethical, and effective. With backgrounds spanning safety engineering, military education, business operations, and academic research, we bring together deep expertise and practical experience across high-stakes sectors. Our team includes a former Civil Service safety engineer shaping national AI policy, a British Army officer specialising in adult learning and innovation, a business operations leader advocating for responsible AI adoption, and a PhD researcher in Natural Language Processing. United by a shared belief in the need for thoughtful, inclusive, and accountable AI, we are working to build tools and guidance that empower organisations to use emerging technologies safely and responsibly.

Chris - Chief Executive Officer
Bringing a strong background in physics, statistics, and business operations to the field of AI ethics. After driving innovation and leading large teams at Unilever, ranging from R&D on pressure testing to managing 45,000 assets and overseeing a 50-person operations department, he shifted focus to AI in 2022 with the rise of large language models. Concerned by their rapid and often careless adoption across industries, Chris became an advocate for responsible AI use.
He now works to help organisations implement AI thoughtfully, aiming to build a safer, more ethically grounded business landscape.
Sam - Head of Learning & Engagement
A British Army Officer with a background in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and five years of leadership experience in education and training. Since commissioning into the Education and Training Service in 2020, he has overseen educational delivery across the North West, managed large teams under pressure, and helped design dozens of adult learning courses. As AI gained prominence in education, Sam focused part of his Master’s in Practical Education and Innovation on its ethical classroom use.
Driven by a passion for upskilling others and responsible innovation, he brings operational leadership and a learner-first mindset to FAIR’s mission.
Ben - Director of Strategy & Assurance
A safety and environmental engineer with eight years of experience in the UK Civil Service, where he led the safe and responsible deployment of emerging technologies across defence robotics, AI policy, and high-stakes safety governance. He has delivered assurance on billion-pound projects, overseen UGV trials, and shaped national AI policy for over 200 teams. As founder of the Autonomous Systems Community of Interest within DE&S and an active member of the IET’s AI Technical Network, Ben has championed AI safety and skills development across sectors.
Now pursuing a PhD on the ethical governance of AI systems, he remains committed to bridging the gap between innovation and rigorous, inclusive safety practice.
Josh - Director of Research & Technology
A PhD researcher in Natural Language Processing at the University of Bristol and a lecturer in mathematics, combining technical depth with a strong foundation in analytical thinking. With a passion for language technologies and their real-world applications, he brings academic rigour and clarity to FAIR’s work.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into society, Josh is focused on ensuring its development remains grounded in sound methodology and ethical best practices.
Together, we can build a responsible future.
